The staff of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) are available to facilitate trainings and in-service days; give a keynote and other presentations; and provide one-time or ongoing support in strategic planning for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Please note that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not currently available for in-person trainings but are providing virtual opportunities.

Pre-Conference/Staff In-Service

  • EDIcon: Foundations of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Our flagship training, EDIcon introduces equity, diversity, and inclusion within a social justice framework. It is designed as a half-day pre-conference or standalone training for in-person settings and can also be facilitated virtually as a series of three interactive trainings. Through multimedia and participatory experiences, EDIcon explores Cultural Competence, Implicit Bias, and Privilege in the context of librarianship and the communities served by libraries. EDIcon provides the foundational understanding of ourselves and our interactions needed to begin to identify and disrupt learned behaviors.

Series

  • EDI Elements: Cultural Competence, Implicit Bias, Microaggressions

This series of three virtual, webinar-style trainings provides a foundational framework for equity, diversity, and inclusion (see individual trainings below for more information). Each training includes a handout of resources.

    Individual Trainings

    • Cultural Competence Attendees at Midwinter Workshop

    Explores culture, cultural humility, and identity to increase awareness of ourselves and our interactions with colleagues and the communities we serve.

    • Facilitating Conversations about Race

    Introduces strategies for facilitating conversations about race, explores ways to reframe difficult conversations, and includes facilitation practice for participants. (In-person only; full day)

    • Facilitating Critical Conversations

    Explores considerations and strategies for facilitating critical conversations, including ways to reframe conversations, and uses scenarios for practice facilitating critical conversations.

    • Identifying Microaggressions

    Explores microaggressions, including the definition, examples of racial and other types of microaggressions, how microaggressions can impact librarianship, and ways to recognize and begin to respond to microaggressions.

    • Implicit Bias

    Develops a common definition of implicit bias, builds awareness of implicit bias as it plays out in everyday situations, and explores ways to disrupt our biases.

    • Uncovering Privilege and Addressing Microaggressions

    Examines the notion of privilege, including how privilege and unconscious bias create barriers for our patrons, staff, and community and how these barriers and interactions can play out in microaggressions. The workshop also explores how to identify and begin to address microaggressions.

    Fees

    For trainings, keynote presentations, and strategic planning support, ODLOS requests a speaker fee and, when applicable, travel and accommodations. While we have a starting fee structure, we also scale our fees based on an individual library’s budget and population served. Please let us know if you need flexibility with our rates. All fees are allocated to the Office’s continuing education efforts, including free webinars and other resources in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion, literacy, and outreach. The fees include planning time, facilitation, handouts, evaluation, and any follow-up.

    • 1 - 1.5-hour virtual or in-person trainings: $1,000
      • Virtual trainings that are webinar-style have a maximum of 500 participants. Virtual trainings that are interactive can accommodate 50 or fewer participants.
      • A series of three or more virtual trainings, such as EDI Elements, receives a 10% discount. With this discount, the fee for EDI Elements is $2,700.
    • EDIcon (virtual or in-person): $2,700
      • Includes two facilitators
      • Virtual EDIcon is divided into three 1.5-hour sessions: 1) Cultural Competence; 2) Implicit Bias; 3) Privilege
      • This rate reflects a 10% discount.
    • EDIcon plus: $3,600
      • Includes:
        • Two facilitators
        • EDIcon
        • Planning session on implementing an action plan with staff (1.5 hours)
        • This rate reflects a 10% discount.
